Environment Canterbury Clean Air

Winter air pollution is a problem in Canterbury's towns and cities every winter. It is mainly caused by burning wood to heat homes. Some people have been burning wood for years and may not even realise their chimney is letting out smoke and contributing to air pollution. Next time you light your wood burner, wait 15 minutes then go outside and have a look at the top of your chimney. If there is any smoke visible, then you may need to adjust your technique or check the moisture content of your wood. Even a small tweak could help. We have resources available at or call 0800 329 276 for a FREE personalised demonstration at your home from one of our Better Burning Advisors.

Environment Canterbury

If your wood burner needs replacing and you live in Timaru, Ashburton, Christchurch, Kaiapoi or Rangiora clean air zones, building consents will be issued only for ultra-low emission wood burners - not low emission wood burners.
